Announcement by Union Minister

Dr. Jitendra Singh, overseeing Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, announced the discovery of lithium resources in Karnataka’s Mandya and Yadgiri districts.

Discovery Details

The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) identified 1,600 tonnes of lithium in the Marlagalla area of Mandya district through preliminary surveys and limited subsurface exploration.

The information was shared by Dr. Singh in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha.

Exploration Efforts

AMD is actively exploring potential geological domains for lithium in other parts of India, including Korba District in Chhattisgarh, and major mica belts in Rajasthan, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh.

Other Lithium Sites

Pegmatite belts in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka are also being investigated for their lithium potential.

Global Importance of Lithium

Lithium, first discovered in 1817, is a highly sought-after mineral globally. It has the lowest density of all metals, reacts vigorously with water, and is toxic.

Additional Uranium Discovery

AMD’s preliminary survey in Himachal Pradesh has identified surface uranium occurrences in Masanbal, Hamirpur district.

Clarification on Atomic Energy Plant

Dr. Singh clarified that no studies have been conducted to establish an atomic energy plant in Himachal Pradesh.

Interest in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is studying various SMR technologies but has no current proposals to collaborate with foreign entities or private players. India and Russia have expressed mutual interest in expanding cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including SMRs.
